Exploring novel electric machines (EMs) with high efficiency, high torque density, and low cost is always an interesting research topic. In recent decades many different types of new EMs have emerged. In this seminar, the internal relationships and operating mechanisms of these machines will be scrutinized and all these machines will be summarized as general flux-modulated machines, as they all employ non-uniform magnetic reluctance to modulate their magnetic flux to produce constant torque. A general theory to explain the operating principle of all these machines will be proposed. The examples of its applications for developing novel electric machines will be presented.

Prof. Weinong Fu received his PhD in electrical engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1999. He is now a full Professor in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Before joining the university in October 2007, he was one of the key developers at Ansoft Corporation in Pittsburgh, USA. He has about seven years of working experience at Ansoft, focusing on the development of the commercial software MaxwellÒ. He has published over 180 papers in refereed international journals. Prof. Fu's current research interests mainly focus on numerical methods of electromagnetic field computation, optimal design of electric devices based on numerical models, applied electromagnetics and novel electric machines.
